New York The Belnord

Another testament to the skill and talent of the firm, this project in New York City for our clients was a highlight during the lockdowns of Covid.  With a third child on the way, this vibrant young family needed a new home to grow into while being closer to family in the city.  Having designed their former Tribeca residence, this transition was seamless.

Respecting the Building

The Belnord, an elegant pre-war gem, was being reimagined by legendary architect Robert A.M. Stern.  We did not take this mission lightly.  Keeping the design integrity of this historically respected building was key.

Familiar Setting

Upon entering through the gated double height barrel-vaulted entryway, you begin to feel the building speak.  A private courtyard with a garden and fountain are flooded with natural light as the four surrounding exterior walls of the structure face inward with Verdi-gris copper bay windows.  Many may find the scene familiar since it is the setting of the critically acclaimed series, “Only Murders in the Building”.

No spaces are off limits

Comfort was the objective of each room. This young family of three children with many friends needed to be welcoming to all. No spaces are off limits, per se. Therefore, durable materials were required throughout while being disguised as luxurious goods. The custom designed cocktail table, for example, is often used as a stage for the girls to perform. Try challenging that design to a team less qualified.

perfection while practicing restraint through simplicity

The interior is laid out in a traditional New York Penthouse manner.  An entry hall leads to a vestibule.  From there, a long corridor with several more cased vestibules open up to the family spaces we had the joy to design.

French white oak flooring inlaid with chevron patterns echo the architecture above.  Plaster moldings, solid paneled doors, and high ceilings accentuate the grandness of the spaces.  Custom made wallcoverings, designed and colored for several areas, began the process of improving on perfection while practicing restraint through simplicity.  The decorative lighting became the jewelry, which is one of Oliver Cloutier’s signatures.

Bedroom Design

In the end, the photos speak for themselves.  With hints of parchment, aged bronze, gesso, and textured fabrics, the tranquility of the home comes through with a sense of livable luxury.  The 10 ft long dining table with its dark marine-blue goatskin top is the scene of many large family dinners.

New Clients. New Friends.

Through the process, our clients were involved, inquisitive, and gracious. They have now become part of our Oliver Cloutier family.

Welcome Home to the Belnord.
